A Little Bit About Me...

My name is Hannah and I am 22 years and old and about to move to New York City. I am pursuing a career in marketing and events. It may seem odd though based on my Economic major and Writing minor, yet hopefully you will see in my portfolio I have acquired much knowledge on human impact on communication. How does writing influence us and how do we influence writing? I have found informal and formal writing are all about understanding tactics and trends to read situations for proper communication.  In the event world, this ability to understand what a situation warrants is the basis of successful communication.

Exercise the writing muscle every day, even if it is only a letter, notes, a title list, a character sketch, a journal entry. Writers are like dancers, like athletes. Without that exercise, the muscles seize up.

The American Essay mirrors an image of the society at the time which it is produced. The essay reflects growth and development in many social realms within America (e.g., politics, current events, popular trends, etc).

WHERE IS ENGLISH GOING?

MAY 2015

English is changing as society fills different needs. Some may debate it is moving rapidly while others will argue slow, however it is undoubtedly changing. This can be attributed to the large digital spaces allowing for voices, and ego chambers of thoughts. Individuals who did not once write now influence prescriptions and language. No matter the pace people may argue these changes on in societies informal discursive spaces slowly will likely affect the standard formal boundaries of writing.

INTRODUCTIONS BEYOND ACADEMIC PLATFORMS

MAY 2015

The Swales Model is a useful tool in academic writing to introduce a piece and give an audience background on a specific niche. But how do people introduce themselves in informal writing? I find that in many ways people utilize the same methods of identifying specific niches and giving background even in informal writing platforms.

Everyone is born with language competence, yet their performance may differ. As media outlet expand and we diversify what is accepted in language our performance on changes. More interesting, these actions are down often unconsciously, yet show society effecting communication.

LANGUAGE IN JOURNALISM

MAY 2018

The word choices writer’s use and restraint in their linguistic choices can determine how a story plays out in the world. In the Jerry Sandusky case this was true when Sara Ganim broke the scandal. Her interesting vocabulary and choice on how to include voices shaped the news. Ganim is an example of how small linguistic decision can set a tone for following voices to follow.

LANGUAGE AND POWER

MAY 2018

Language can be a tool to shape our realities. The way people understand words is subjective and shaped on experiences, typically on those experiences in their speech communities. Germany in the 1920s was a time where unity was desired and those in power used language as a tool to create hierarchy and morph perceptions of reality. Is it possible for the change of a definition of a word or the feeling around to assist in such oppression? Read for yourself the power of words.
